Fictional Discourse and the Law (Paperback): Hans J. Lind Fictional Discourse and the Law (Paperback)
Hans J. Lind
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Following the basic presumptions of the early law-as-literature movement, past approaches have mainly focused on textuality and narrativity as the common denominators of law and literature, and have largely ignored the topic of fictionality. This volume provides a much needed analysis of this gap.

A Siberian Journey - The Journal of Hans Jakob Fries, 1774 -1776 (Paperback): Walther Kirchner A Siberian Journey - The Journal of Hans Jakob Fries, 1774 -1776 (Paperback)
Walther Kirchner; Hans J. Fries
R1,083 Discovery Miles 10 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1955 in German, this journal, published here in English for the first time, describes the adventures of a young Swiss surgeon who sought his fortune in eighteenth-century Russia, where he eventually made his mark and rose to a high position. The journal covers his journey to Southern Russia and his service there during the campaigns of 1770-74, and gives a day-by-day account of his trip through Siberia to the Chinese borders as a surgeon assisting a recruiting officer. Fries' simple, straightforward and fresh narrative provides a vivid, human introduction to the little-known land and people of Siberia. In contrast to the more scientific specialist works of other eighteenth-century discoverers in Siberia, Fries' account conveys the special lure of the country, with lively descriptions of the ordinary life of its inhabitants, of the town and countryside, of nature, people, customs and impressions. Their travels took the two companions through all of Siberia to the very borders of China, and we gain a valuable glimpse of the relations between Russians and Chinese at the time. Along the way we also meet numerous westerners whom a strange fate had brought to this isolated, enigmatic land. To Fries' text is added a wide-ranging introduction by Professor Kirchner, which gives an account of the pioneering foreign scientists and tourists who travelled in Siberia during the century following the death of Peter the Great in 1725. Professor Kirchner traces the routes of their journeys, and describes the written works, some of them now classics, which ensued. The introduction thus provides an up-to-date bibliographical guide to the more elaborate and scholarly works which are supplemented by the new perspective on political and daily life in Siberia provided by the journal of Hans Jakob Fries.

Genomics of Plants and Fungi (Paperback): Rolf A. Prade, Hans J. Bohnert Genomics of Plants and Fungi (Paperback)
Rolf A. Prade, Hans J. Bohnert
R1,861 Discovery Miles 18 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume provides technical insight on how genomics-oriented studies may be used to bring new understanding to established models of fungal development. The book helps to assess and solve problems associated with multiple copies of genes and proteins with seemingly identical functions and depicts various industrial applications. To bridge the information gap resulting from this field's explosive growth, Genomics of Plants and Fungi addresses the implementation of workflow applications with the METEOR Workflow Management System, and discusses clinical manifestations of Aspergillus infection, stunted and medusa genes, hyphal mating and fertilization, and vegetative incompatibility.

The Discourse of Powerlessness and Repression - Life stories of domestic migrant workers in Hong Kong (Paperback): Hans J.... The Discourse of Powerlessness and Repression - Life stories of domestic migrant workers in Hong Kong (Paperback)
Hans J. Ladegaard
R1,292 Discovery Miles 12 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drawing on a large corpus of narratives recorded at a church shelter for abused domestic helpers in Hong Kong, this monograph explores how the women discursively construct themselves in sharing sessions with other helpers. They see themselves as 'helpers' who have come to Hong Kong to help their families, to help the people in the city, and to serve God. A wide variety of competing identities are constructed in the narratives: submissive helper, sacrificial mother, daughter and wife, and powerless traumatised victim, but also resourceful indignant migrant women who, through sharing and peer support, become empowered to fight against abusive employers. This book provides a detailed discourse analysis of the women's narratives, but it also explores larger issues such as global migration, exploitation, language and power, abuse and the psychology of evil, intergroup communication, and peer support and empowerment.

Towards a General Theory of Translational Action - Skopos Theory Explained (Hardcover): Katharina Reiss, Hans J Vermeer Towards a General Theory of Translational Action - Skopos Theory Explained (Hardcover)
Katharina Reiss, Hans J Vermeer; Translated by Christiane Nord
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first English translation of the seminal book by Katharina Reiss and Hans Vermeer, Grundlegung einer allgemeinen Translationstheorie, first published in 1984. The first part of the book was written by Vermeer and explains the theoretical foundations and basic principles of skopos theory as a general theory of translation and interpreting or 'translational action', whereas the second part, penned by Katharina Reiss, seeks to integrate her text-typological approach, first presented in 1971, as a 'specific theory' that focuses on those cases in which the skopos requires equivalence of functions between the source and target texts. Almost 30 years after it first appeared, this key publication is now finally accessible to the next generations of translation scholars. In her translation, Christiane Nord attempts to put skopos theory and her own concept of 'function plus loyalty' to the test, by producing a comprehensible, acceptable text for a rather heterogeneous audience of English-speaking students and scholars all over the world, at the same time as acting as a loyal intermediary for the authors, to whom she feels deeply indebted as a former student and colleague.

Personality Structure and Measurement (Psychology Revivals) (Paperback): Hans J. Eysenck, Sybil B.G. Eysenck Personality Structure and Measurement (Psychology Revivals) (Paperback)
Hans J. Eysenck, Sybil B.G. Eysenck
R1,597 Discovery Miles 15 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1969, this book deals extensively with the description and measurement of personality.

Beginning with a statement of the principles of typological research in psychology, set against the background of general taxonomic principles in biology, the study discusses in detail results and generalisations from the Eysencks previous work. The second part of the book describes several large-scale studies using personality questionnaires prepared by the authors, as well as the standard ones of Cattell and Guilford. There is a comparative study of the Eysenck, Cattell and Guilford inventories, which analyses the degree to which similar factors can be found in these three instruments and discusses areas of agreement and disagreement between the three authors. The third part deals with personality studies in children, and includes a chapter on personality structure in subnormal subjects. These studies are concerned with discovering the extent to which personality structure changes with increasing age, and to what extent it is possible to measure personality in younger children. They also examine sex differences in personality structure, and show quite marked differences between the sexes on a number of primary personality traits.

The results of the Eysencks work in this field directed new light on the structure of personality and cast doubt on many widely accepted findings of the time."

The Development of Autobiographical Memory (Hardcover): Hans J Markowitsch, Harald Welzer The Development of Autobiographical Memory (Hardcover)
Hans J Markowitsch, Harald Welzer
R4,003 R2,807 Discovery Miles 28 070 Save R1,196 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Autobiographical memory constitutes an essential part of our personality, giving us the ability to distinguish ourselves as an individual with a past, present and future. This book reveals how the development of a conscious self, an integrated personality and an autobiographical memory are all intertwined, highlighting the parallel development of the brain, memory and personality.

Focusing strongly on developmental aspects of memory and integrating evolutionary and anthropological perspectives, areas of discussion include:

  • why non-human animals lack autobiographical memory
  • development of the speech areas in the brain
  • prenatal and transnatal development of memory
  • autobiographical memory in young children.

This book offers a unique approach through combining both neuroscientfic and social scientific viewpoints, and as such will be of great interest to all those wanting to broaden their knowledge of the development and acquisition of memory and the conscious self.

Historical Dictionary of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation (Hardcover): Hans J. Hillerbrand Historical Dictionary of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation (Hardcover)
Hans J. Hillerbrand
R4,006 Discovery Miles 40 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Reformation of the 16th century has always been seen as one of the pivotal events in European history. Lord Acton, the famous 19th-century British historian, compared the importance of Martin Luther's speech at the diet at Worms in 1521 with Napoleon's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1813. Lord Acton's may or may not be an extravagant claim, but it is certainly true that the events of the 16th and 17th centuries, now called the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, changed forever the religious and political history of the West. The Historical Dictionary of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation provides a one-volume, balanced, alternative to the overwhelming amounts of literature on the events of the time and the theological and political debates that spawned those events.

The Psychology of Politics (Hardcover): Hans J. Eysenck The Psychology of Politics (Hardcover)
Hans J. Eysenck
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In writing The Psychology of Politics, Hans Eysenck had two aims in mind: to write a book about modern developments in the field of attitude studies which would be intelligible to the layman; and one that would integrate into one consistent theoretical system a large number of contributions on the topic from different fields. Eysenck believes that science has something to say about such problems as anti-Semitism, the origin and growth of fascist and communist ideologies, the causal determinants of voting behavior, the structure of opinions and attitudes, and the relationship between politics and personality. He seeks to rescue these factual findings from the obscurity of technical journals and present them in a more accessible form. The research presented in this book outlines the main principles of organization and structure in the field of attitudes. These principles account in a remarkably complete and detailed manner for the systems of political organization found in Great Britain, that is, the Conservative, Liberal, and Socialist parties, and the communist and fascist groups. Next, Eysenck relates these principles to the system of personality structure which for many years formed the main focus of research activity at the Institute of Psychiatry in London. The Psychology of Politics integrates attitude research with modern learning theory. In his new introduction, Eysenck writes that his research and personal experiences in Germany led him to believe that authoritarianism could appear equally well on the left as on the right. He saw Stalin as equally authoritarian as Hitler, and communism as equally totalitarian as Nazism. The Psychology of Politics contains the evidence and arguments Eysenck used to demonstrate his approach. This volume is of enduring significance for psychologists, political theorists, and historians. It is by indirection a major statement in modern liberalism.

Language and Intercultural Communication in the Workplace - Critical approaches to theory and practice (Hardcover): Hans J.... Language and Intercultural Communication in the Workplace - Critical approaches to theory and practice (Hardcover)
Hans J. Ladegaard, Christopher Jenks
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From language classrooms to outdoor markets, the workplace is fundamental to socialisation. It is not only a site of employment where money is made and institutional roles are enacted through various forms of discourse; it is also a location where people engage in social actions and practices. The workplace is an interesting research site because of advances in communication technology, cheaper and greater options for travel, and global migration and immigration. Work now requires people to travel over great geographical distances, communicate with cultural 'others' located in different time zones, relocate to different regions or countries, and conduct business in online settings. The workplace is thus changing and evolving, creating new and emerging communicative contexts. This volume provides a greater understanding of workplace cultures, particularly the ways in which working in highly interconnected and multicultural societies shape language and intercultural communication. The chapters focus on critical approaches to theory and practice, in particular how practice is used to shape theory. They also question the validity and universality of existing models. Some of the predominant models in intercultural communication have been criticised for being Eurocentric or Anglocentric, and this volume proposes alternative frameworks for analysing intercultural communication in the workplace. This book was originally published as a special issue of Language and Intercultural Communication.

Computational Statistical Physics (Hardcover): Lucas Boettcher, Hans J. Herrmann Computational Statistical Physics (Hardcover)

New Perspectives on the Chinese Revolution (Hardcover): Tony Saich, Hans J Van De Ven New Perspectives on the Chinese Revolution (Hardcover)
Tony Saich, Hans J Van De Ven
R5,373 Discovery Miles 53 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New Perspectives on the Chinese Communist Revolution brings together the work of a new, international generation of students of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) history. Exploiting new sources made available in China in the 1980s, some chapters in this book bring new events and areas into the study of the CCP. Other chapters provide detailed analyses on the basis of new evidence of long-standing problems in the history of the CCP, such as the rise of Mao Zedong. Yet others are significant because they offer new explanatory frameworks for understanding CCP history, such as the importance of Yanan as symbolic capital. New issues are brought up, such as the role of women, internal CCP terror, the use of opium sales to sustain the Yanan economy, and the great difficulty of controlling mass peasant movements once mobilized. The most important contribution of the volume is to show that the old explanations of the CCP's success - peasant support, organizational strength, the supply of administrative services - are incomplete and do not account for the diverse and heterogeneous nature of the CCP and the great difficulties it had in building up mass support. This volume makes clear that the question of the CCP's success remains one of the most elusive but also most important that historians of China face today.

The Experimental Study of Freudian Theories (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover): Hans J. Eysenck, Glenn D. Wilson The Experimental Study of Freudian Theories (Psychology Revivals) (Hardcover)
Hans J. Eysenck, Glenn D. Wilson
R5,516 Discovery Miles 55 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1973 the editors of this book collected together those studies which had been considered at the time to yield the best evidence in support of Freudian theory, and found on close examination that they failed to provide any such proof. Each paper is printed in full and is followed by a critical discussion which raises questions of statistical treatment, sufficiency of controls and alternative interpretations. The particular usefulness of this format is that it allows readers to form their own opinions while providing helpful suggestions and guidelines on how to approach experimental studies with a critical mind.
